Kidlit Group Gallery Show

I'm currently in a group gallery show with 3 other talented children's book illustrators at the Hess Gallery in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

I have 9 book illustrations in the show. In the bottom photo you can see my son reading below my illustration with a quote by Neil Gaiman: "A book is a dream that you hold in your hands."

On March 9, we gathered for a conversation with students from Pine Manor College to discuss how we create our work and how we get work in the crowded field of illustration. It's always interesting to compare notes with fellow illustrators!

Each of us does very different work:

Priscilla Alpaugh Cotter works in watercolor and colored pencil

Wayne Geehan works in acrylics and oils

Toby Williams works with cut paper

Sticky Situation: Note Passing

Sticky Situation: You're caught in class with a note that you had nothing to do with. What do you do?

Sticky Situation: Cheating

An illustration for Scholastic News 4, a weekly news magazine for fourth graders. The section of the magazine where my illustration appears is called Sticky Situation and it depicts a predicament that the kids need to figure out what is the right thing to do. 

In this case, Patrick is cheating off Gwen's science test and although she doesn't want him to fail the class, she knows it's not right.

After this illustration, Scholastic hired me to do another 21 Sticky Situations, so there's more to come!

Value vs Growth Investing

Out this month in Black Enterprise magazine is a great article that I had the privilege to illustrate. It discusses the merits of both types of investing, Value and Growth, to help enable the reader to make better decisions.

I was asked by the editor to come up with a couple of sketch ideas that would depict the two investing options and this is the one that was chosen. I couldn't possibly convey how many poses I went through before deciding on the two in the illustration- I didn't want this to be too testosterone-driven or make it look like either figure has the advantage- so both men are depicted as if they had just been going about their usual day at the office when someone gave them some armor and a sword and told them to fight.
